Below I describe how I made the switch and solved minor problems. It also doesn’t have points that wear changing dwell and timing and burn reducing current flow and therefore amount of spark. The GMC V8 from Truck engine sizes were , , and cubic inches. They introduced the HEI distributor in The HEI cap is about an inch bigger in diameter causes problems later, see below and somewhat taller no problem under a GMC truck hood. The Distributor I bought a distributor from a ’76 full size Pontiac equipped with a cubic inch V8.

August 5, As I recall, the late GM points distrubutors had a trap-door in the side. Then hook up a dwell tachometer and, with the engine running, adjust the screw until the dwell is within spec. I don’t recall the exact spec off the top of my head, but 28 to 32 degrees rings a bell. Feeler gauges cannot be used with these distributors because there is stuff in the way.

How to Hook Up a Tach Dwell Meter by Robert Bayly A tach-dwell meter is a combination electronic device that measures engine rpm as a tachometer and ignition point dwell angle. The tachometer function is self-explanatory; it measures engine speed in revolutions per minute. The dwell function measures the degrees of distributor rotation that ignition points are closed and is directly related to ignition point gap.

In fact, the ignition point gap can be set by adjusting the dwell angle. Attach the red lead on your meter to the negative “-” terminal on the ignition coil. Attach the black lead on your meter to any good ground on the engine; that is, an unpainted metal part. Set the meter for the number of cylinders your engine has. There should be a switch with engine settings on it. Set the meter for “tach” or “dwell. When using the meter, switch back and forth between tach and dwell. With more than 15 years in the auto industry, Bayly has been an auto and diesel mechanic, service writer and parts manager.

He received certificates from Pontiac parts system , Cat Diesel engine service , Saab and Fiat parts- warranty system.

I am not responsible for your actions. You need an ECU diagram of your vehicle. Find the correct pin and find the wire that attaches to it. Use a wire tap and run that wire as the signal wire to your new tach You changed a points distributor on a Chevy to a HEI do you have a diagram showing the wiring? Make sure it is a full battery voltage to the distributor.

This could explain your almost double tach readings. Why not run a new white wire from the ignition switch to the tach and then onto the coil. Just disconnect the current wire going from the switch to the coil and see if that makes a difference. Also the way the current goes through the loop on the back of the tach makes a big difference. Hook it up in reverse and the tach will not work properly no matter what you do. The ‘pot’ they talk about is located inside the case on the back of the guts inside facing to the rear.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been in one but it will be a little round metal case with a white plastic wheel on top of it with a screw driver slot. Looking at the tach from the front it is located at about the two to five o’clock position.

Jan 24,  · Dwell meters and timing lights are not needed for newer engines and are terribly cheap and not old enough to be collector’s items. I think you can pick one up for not over five dollars. I bought my light in about the late 70’s and they were only about $30 then.

Opening angle Points opening as the lobe of the cam starts to lift the contact-breaker heel. The dwell angle varies according to the make of car; check it in a service manual. There are two scales on the meter, one for four-cylinder engines and one for six-cylinder engines. Eight-cylinder vehicles are taken from the four-cylinder scale and halved.

Connecting the meter Follow the maker’s instructions. Normally one lead is connected to the side terminal of the distributor if it is outside the distributor body, or the CB contact-breaker terminal on the coil , and the other to earth. Most modern cars have negative earth: On a vehicle with positive earth, connect the red positive lead of the meter to earth and the black negative lead to the distributor or coil. Measuring the dwell angle If you have just fitted new contact-breaker points, set them to approximately the right gap with a feeler gauge.

With the dwell meter connected, start the engine and let it settle to a smooth tickover. If it will not tick over steadily, check the cause s and rectify any faults. The meter reading should stay steady at a steady engine speed.

Apr 29,  · You hook up the white wire to the neg side of the coil and the other to ground. The RPM will work but dwell is for setting points. If you have a distributer with points it will help but if it is electronic ignition you cant set your dwell.

Are there any changes that I need to make in my wiring and connections? The points distributor used a resistance to lower the voltage to the points in the run position to prevent wear on the points. This was done with either an external ballast resistor or a resistance wire in the ignition circuit depending on the year of the car. When converting to an HEI there are three issues which must be addressed. The first concerns the resistance in the run circuit. The second concerns the gauge of wire feeding the HEI distributor.

The third concerns the starter 12 volt override and the ignition switch. When using HEI, the distributor requires a 12 volt feed. In order to achieve this the ballast resistor or the resistance wire must be removed from the circuit and replaced with a pure 12 gauge feed wire. This feed wire must be 12 gauge from the ignition switch to the bulkhead and then from the bulkhead to the HEI power terminal.

This solves the first two concerns.

You should get a range of readings, depending upon the position of the sender unit float. If no reading is shown, the sender unit needs to be removed for replacement or repair. The petrol tank sender unit uses a variable resistor , which you can check for continuity by using the resistance scale on the multi-meter. Disconnect the wire to the sender unit and connect the meter between its terminal and a suitable earth point.

Tue Nov 06, 2: Will a pict work with distributor? The 30 PICT carburetors can all be interchanged and run with the distributor. As stated above, there are better stock options. Colin please note that the vacuum advance in all of the 30 series carburetors had drillings that supplied a vacuum signal based on overall venturi air speed as well as manifold vacuum. That means, unlike the 34 Pict 3, the signal did not drop out entirely under full load at high rpm While I am far from an expert on carburetors I’m going to stand behind my date ranges as originally stated not the corrections provided by Amskeptic Pretty sure the only issue here is WHEN was the change from PICT2 to PICT3.

Knowing VW it may have not been at the beginning of a model year as the the , and engines were very similar I think had that throttle positioner, not sure about earlier? This changeover also apparently marked the change from M to T dizzy’s? Never having studied it too closely, I notice NONE of these dizzy’s has specific part numbers, though the type 2 did.

If you are using the White wire points or electronic amplifier of the MSD to trigger the ignition, follow these steps. Make sure the ignition switch is in the Off position. Disconnect the MSD White wire from the distributor points or the ignition amplifier. Turn the ignition to the On position. Tap the White wire to ground several times.

For more information on Tachometers and MSD Tach Adapters, see the Tachometer Section on page 6. If your GM vehicle has an in-line filter it may cause the tach to .

The different knob positions just changes what it reads. The tach part measures the opening cycle of the points and gives you the rpm. Dwell setting measures the amount of time the points are closed and reads out in degrees. The points setting is an ohm meter. It measures the resistance of the points being closed and it’s needle tells you when the points are good or bad if the condenser is bad or the coil is bad. You set the points like normal at. That is the max opening at the top of the cam.

Dwell measures the closed time and is, I believe 35 degrees. The amount of time the point set is closed.
